This is a new image from N.A.S.A.'s Spitzer and Hubble Space Telescopes and
looks more like an abstract painting than a cosmic snapshot of the Orion Nebula.
Orion is located 1,500 light-years away from Earth, and is the brightest star
cluster in the sword of the "hunter" constellation.  The cosmic cloud is also our
closest massive star-formation factory, and astronomers suspect that it contains
about 1,000 young stars.  The Orion constellation can be seen in the fall and
winer night skies from northern latitudes.  The constellation's nebula is invisible
to the unaided eye, but can be resolved with binoculars or small telescopes.
This masterpiece was "painted" by hundreds of baby stars on a canvas of gas
and dust, with intense ultraviolet light and strong stellar winds as brushes.  At
the heart of the "artwork" is a set of four monstrously massive stars, collectively
called the Trapezium.  These behemoths are approximately 100,000 times
brighter than our Sun.  Their community can be identified as the yellow smudge
at the center of this grand and colorful image.  The swirls of green were revealed
by Hubble's ultraviolet and visible-light detectors.  They are hydrogen and sulfur
gases heated by intense ultraviolet radiation from the Trapezium's stars.  Wisps
of red, also detected by Spitzer, indicate infrared from illuminated clouds
containing carbon-rich molecules called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.  On
Earth, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are found on burnt toast and in
automobile exhaust.  Additional stars in Orion are sprinkled throughout the
image in a rainbow of colors.  Spitzer exposed infant stars deeply embedded in a
cocoon of dust and gas, (orange-yellow dots).  Hubble found less embedded
stars, (specks of green), and stars in the foreground, (blue).  Stellar winds from
clusters of newborn stars scattered throughout the cloud etched all of the
well-defined ridges and cavities.

              One light-year = traveling @ 186,000 miles per second,
x 60 seconds per minute, x 60 minutes per hour,
x 24 hours in one day, x 365 days per year!
Multiplied By 1,500 To Reach The Orion Nebula!

To walk 1 light-year, at a moderate pace of 20 minutes a mile, it would take you
225 million years to complete your journey, (not including stops for meals or the
restroom).  If you started just before dinosaurs
appeared on Earth, you'd
probably be finishing your hike just about now.  Even if you hitched a ride on
N.A.S.A.'s Mach 9.68x- 43A Hypersonic Scram Jet, the fastest aircraft in the
world, it would take about 95,000 years to cover the distance.

You'll need a pretty big travel bag too; for walking such a distance requires
substantial supplies.  You'd need 2 trillion Power Bars to fuel your trip.  You'd
also produce a heap of worn-out shoes.  The typical pair of sneakers will last you
500 miles, so you'd burn through some 11.8 billion pairs of shoes; and all that
effort wouldn't get you very far, astronomically speaking, because the closest
star to our Sun, is Proxima Centauri which is 4.22 light-years away!
